Water Sports Training with Your Dog

Doing the same old thing with your dog gets boring for you and your dog.  It can be the reason you don’t even do things with your dog anymore.  Boredom is high on list of why people stop doing things even if it is good for you.  Research says that doing something new is the single biggest element you can add to increase your happiness factor fast.  This is true for your dog as well!

Can Your Dog Be a Water Dog?

Not all dogs are water dogs, but many dogs you might not think are water dogs would actually love to play some type of water sports.  We humans have a tendency to label dogs as “doesn’t like water” because either the first time the dog was introduced to water it didn’t go over all that well, or the breed doesn’t seem like it would be a water dog.

Even people who have some sort of exposure to many more things than dogs usually can have trepidation about a new activity or event.  Many things we do like biking, yoga, stand up paddling, or swimming we weren’t good at the first time.  Nerves are part of the learning curve.  You get over it with practice and with a mind that logics and the volition to go on our own new things become a part of our lives.

Your dog has to rely on you to create the same thing for them.  For some reason we humans forget that just because the dog wasn’t good at water activities the first time or showed signs of being extremely nervous doesn’t mean this is an activity to never try again.

Finding a trainer who understands dogs and training can help tremendously with a couple of lessons you and your dog will be on your way to having tons of fun in the water.  More fun stuff to do is a good thing!

Animals are such great teachers in so many ways. As I went horse back riding this week it occurred to me once again how much we can learn by not talking so much. We can learn and train our dogs by not talking so much.

How could my dog have taught me about barefoot running? Well, the concept is one in which you actually strike on the ball of your foot before you land on your heel. Have you ever noticed how agile and effortless your dog is while running? Guess what? You dog doesn’t land on a heel but on the ball or paw pad of the foot.
